Description
The history of Vatrushki began in ancient times, when people worshipped the pagan sun god Yarila. Then round pies with cottage cheese filling were baked in his honor. The baking got its name much later, and the recipe was first mentioned in the XVIII century. According to one version, the word Vatrushki comes from the ancient name of the hearth, vatra. In ancient times, Vatrushki was baked in the form of a large pie, which was cut into pieces so that it was enough for the whole family. Currently, this pastry is prepared in portions: curd filling is spread on a small flatbread made of pastry and baked until golden brown.
